New Roles · Forward Deployed Engineer

Prepare FDEs to discover, build, and run the new work. Start with the stakeholder conversation.

A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) works with a customer to turn a business problem into a working solution in that customer's context. That might mean connecting an invoice workflow to approved records or building an agent around an existing application. Nuvepro prepares FDEs to discover the real work, build against the relevant constraints, test the result and explain the operating handoff through bespoke projects and simulations.

FDE Conversation Simulations

Practise the conversation that shapes the build.

Interview a simulated stakeholder about the work they need to improve. Surface the problem, missing information, constraints, and decisions before choosing the technology. Use the agreed problem as the starting point for hands-on building and a stakeholder demonstration.

Discover the real work

Ask how the workflow runs, where it gets stuck, and who owns the decisions. Check what data and systems are available instead of assuming the answer.

Agree what to solve

Turn the conversation into a bounded problem statement with the outcome, constraints, and handoffs that matter. Use feedback to identify what your questions missed.

Build and explain the result

Work with the scenario's data and tools in a sandbox. Demonstrate how the solution addresses the problem, explain its limits, and identify what must be checked before operational use.

These exercises prepare people for stakeholder discovery and delivery responsibilities. Human assessment, agent evaluation, and acceptance of the operational workflow remain distinct checks.

Shape the cohort around the work it needs to perform

Bring the target workflow, learner starting levels and project context. Confirm cohort size, regions, scheduling, available practice data, approved tools and licences, technical prerequisites and learner support before agreeing delivery. The AI Bootcamp runs for 6–8 weeks; its scope and activities are agreed together.

  1. Discovery and problem framing

Practise stakeholder questions, check missing evidence and agree a bounded problem. Review the conversation, problem statement, constraints and decision owners.
  2. Build and test

Use the scenario's approved data and tools to develop a bounded solution. Review implementation artifacts, test results, source checks and exception handling against agreed criteria.
  3. Demonstration and handoff

Explain the result, limits and receiving team's responsibilities. Review the demonstration and handoff notes, with feedback on both technical work and stakeholder judgment.

Assessment evidence covers the responsibilities practised. Client interview selection, project staffing and billability depend on your decisions and project conditions. Human readiness, agent evaluation and customer acceptance of an operating workflow remain separate.

What a Forward Deployed Engineer actually is

Works within the customer's workflow to connect a business problem to a working technical solution. Responsibilities can include stakeholder discovery, bounded building, testing, integration and operating handoff. Scope and overlap with adjacent engineering roles vary by employer.

Define the responsibilities and acceptance criteria for your team rather than relying on a title alone.

A useful preparation project therefore starts with stakeholder discovery: understand the workflow, ask for missing evidence, agree a bounded problem and build against its constraints. The technical demonstration and handoff should explain what works, what remains uncertain and what the operating owner must accept.

"I did this 25 years before the role had a name. We built India's first fully indigenous bedside monitor, and everything worked in the lab. Then I took it to hospital ERs and watched a patient roll over and flood the ECG leads with noise no test plan had imagined. The field is where the product gets finished. That is the FDE's job."

In its 19 November 2025 FDE explainer, Salesforce reported a commitment to build a 1,000-person FDE team. OpenAI's 5 February 2026 Frontier announcement named HP, Intuit, Oracle, State Farm, Thermo Fisher and Uber among its early adopters and described customer collaboration with FDEs. These are provider-reported examples, not evidence of Nuvepro delivery.

The common thread is engineering grounded in enterprise work. This reinforces the need to discover the problem, build against relevant constraints and demonstrate what works. Nuvepro prepares those responsibilities through scoped projects, simulations and assessment. Production acceptance remains with the enterprise.

How we build your FDE team

Four capabilities. One continuous engagement.

In a connected practice track, your FDEs follow one simulated customer: interview its stakeholders, build against its constraints, extend a reference product and demonstrate the result. Agree the scenario and stages for your engagement.

Stage 1 · Domain context

Learn in GenAI Sandboxes

Your FDEs practise with the records, systems and terminology relevant to the agreed customer scenario. Agree the tools and checks for the exercise so the team can inspect results and investigate failures.

Stage 2 · Discovery skill

Practice in the Customer Interview Simulator

Practise interviewing a simulated stakeholder whose brief contains information you need to uncover. The conversation responds to your questions; a model-generated debrief and score help review what you established, missed or assumed. Use that feedback with the scenario brief and a reviewer.

Stage 3 · Solving

Prototype in sandboxes

The problem surfaced in discovery becomes the build target. Your FDEs prototype against masked data inside a sandbox that mirrors the customer constraint they discovered, including the ones IT put there for good reasons.

Stage 4 · Productization instinct

Extend a working product, then show the customer

The capstone can include extending a running reference application using the prototype from discovery. Your FDE tests the existing behavior and the proposed change, then demonstrates the result against the problem agreed with the simulated stakeholder.

Practice beyond the prototype

From prototype to a product that is already running

A prototype is one part of the work. The customer may run a live product with years of data in it, integrations nobody documented, and users who did not ask for a change. The integration needs its own practice, evidence, and agreed responsibilities.

Production integration and acceptance remain separate decisions with the workflow owner.

Questions for operations leaders

Should we build an internal FDE team or buy vendor FDEs?

Choose around your workflow, existing capability and operating responsibilities. An internal team can build continuing domain knowledge; a vendor or delivery partner can contribute specialist product and implementation expertise. Compare model choice, access, integration, handoff, support and commercial terms for the proposed engagement. Nuvepro can scope preparation for your people or a partner team; neither team structure automatically establishes readiness or avoids technology dependencies.

What does an FDE team ship first?

Start with one defined workflow and a problem agreed with its stakeholders. Your team practises discovery, builds a solution in a sandbox, and demonstrates how it addresses that problem. The capstone can include extending a reference product. Preparation, integration and production acceptance are scoped to the work and the team's starting capability, with the timeline agreed for that engagement.

We already have solutions engineers. Is this a new hire or a conversion?

Start with the capabilities your people already bring. Solutions, customer, and implementation engineers can build on stakeholder-facing experience while adding AI-build skills. Developers may need more practice in discovery and stakeholder communication. Scope the preparation to the workflow and the gaps, rather than assuming everyone needs the same curriculum.

Why does the customer problem matter more than the tech?

The customer needs a solution to a work problem. Discovery establishes the decisions, evidence and constraints the build must address. Your FDE needs to show both how they understood the problem and how their solution answers it; agree the assessment criteria for each.

What do FDE conversations help people practise?

Understanding the stakeholder's workflow before proposing a solution. People practise asking for missing context, discovering constraints, agreeing a bounded problem statement, and explaining how their build answers it. A simulated conversation is preparation and feedback, not a customer sign-off or authorization to put an agent into production.

Prepare the people who connect discovery to delivery.

Bring a workflow, your team's starting experience, cohort levels and delivery regions. Discuss stakeholder conversation practice, hands-on building, tools, licences, support and the readiness evidence your FDEs need.
