Task Intelligence vs. Skill Intelligence: Connect Capabilities to Real Work
A SQL skill tag can describe several people who do very different work. One reconciles fund transactions, another maintains a data pipeline, and another prepares a forecast. To change that work with AI, connect their capabilities to the records, decisions and outputs they actually handle.
Updated 18 October 2026. Current provider descriptions are linked below; dated observations retain their original scope.
Two useful views of the same work
Skills information helps describe capabilities and preparation needs. Task and workflow information helps describe the activities, dependencies and responsibilities involved. Neither a skill tag nor a task label demonstrates that a person or agent can perform a particular assignment.
Eightfold, Phenom, TechWolf, SkyHive and Gloat are examples buyers may encounter when evaluating workforce information and planning. Their scopes evolve. TechWolf’s current Work Intelligence description includes task-level analysis and recommendations, so a blanket claim that skills vendors cannot examine tasks would be inaccurate.
Use the views together. If an analyst will review an agent’s reconciliation, the workflow design should specify the records and exceptions to check. The preparation plan should identify the accounting judgment, data handling and tool use the analyst needs to demonstrate.
A financial-analyst example
Consider preparing a daily cash-flow report and reconciling fund transactions. The proposed project supplies an approved transaction extract, opening balances, the reporting rules and known discrepancies. An agent could assemble a draft reconciliation and explanation. The analyst checks the source amounts, missing entries and proposed adjustments.
Other activities need their own scope: updating monthly forecasts, preparing pre-trade analysis, checking a compliance rule, or explaining a financial risk. A role title does not supply those conditions. A label on a task does not authorize a trade, a settlement, a ledger adjustment or a compliance conclusion.
Start with one output the team needs. Define normal cases and exceptions, the tools a participant may use and who can approve a consequential action. Functional and technical participants can build or configure parts of the workflow according to their experience; they are not restricted to separate user and builder tracks.
Connect a capability to an observable assignment
- SQL and accounting knowledge
- Reconcile a supplied transaction extract with a ledger balance.
- Explain mismatches and retain evidence for proposed adjustments.
- Forecasting and business partnering
- Update a forecast with approved actuals and assumptions.
- Check calculations and explain uncertainty to the budget owner.
- Software engineering
- Build the data mapping and access checks for the exercise.
- Run tests against missing records, invalid permissions and known defects.
Classification is an input to testing
Automate, augment and human-led are useful starting categories for discussing a proposed division of work. Add an unresolved category or request more context when the activity is too broad. Keep accountability with a named person or team even where software executes an agreed step.
The Harvard/BCG study by Dell’Acqua and colleagues found that AI assistance had different effects on the consulting tasks studied. It did not test Nuvepro’s classifier. The implication for a project is to check the proposed contribution against relevant tasks and failure cases, rather than assume a category establishes the capability frontier.
Kim, Kim and Koning’s working paper studied 515 high-growth startups receiving information about how other firms reorganized production around AI. It was not an experiment in Nuvepro task classification. Its results do not establish that mapping tasks causes a particular enterprise revenue outcome.
Connect preparation to demonstrated responsibilities
A project might ask an analyst to identify a duplicated transaction, challenge an unsupported adjustment and explain an unresolved balance. A developer might implement the data mapping, access checks and replayable tests. Assess the responsibilities actually assigned to each participant.
A capability framework such as SFIA or an internal model can help describe the preparation needed. Agree the mapping and review it with domain owners. Scope any exchange with an existing skills platform separately, including data rights, identifiers and supported interfaces; this article does not promise automatic integration with every framework.
A person’s assessment, an agent evaluation and an operating owner’s acceptance answer different questions. Completing training or generating a task inventory does not combine them into one readiness score.
Bring the work, not just the job title
Nuvepro scopes simulations, business environments and preparation around the enterprise’s work. Your team builds or configures an agreed result with support matched to its starting capability. The 6 to 8 week AI Bootcamp is one option, alongside established technical labs and separately agreed evaluation of existing agents.
Ask for the example records, expected outputs, failure checks and reviewer responsibilities. Agree implementation assistance, integration and production operation explicitly. The useful comparison is whether the engagement gives your people and agents relevant work to perform and evidence for the next decision.
